Can anyone tell me what sort of plant produces this seed pod? I came back from holiday to find them in my garden..the seeds are brown and sort of triangular...as I can't remember all the stuff I planted last autumn I have no idea what it's called... also will the little seeds germinate if I sow them now?
Many thanks, Queenie

Looks like a seed head from a spring flowering bulb...possibly a tulip ?

i'd go for crocus as I have these in the borders now. yes you can grow them but it'll be 3yrs at least before you get flowers. I leave mine to scatter and see what happens.

I,d sow them, I love seeing what I can get to germinate and what they become.
I got my calla lily seeds to grow and this year they are flowering, the two at the moment are a pretty pink, from a cream plant.....fascinating.....

I might have said a pansy but its too big and does look like a tulip.

Its great to see when they self seed.

And over the yrs I have had many hellebores and I uplifted them and they are now up in walled garden of Glamis Castle.

Thanks for all your help and comments, it's surely not a crocus or pansy....I remember the flower did look like a small tulip and the leaves are the same, I don't remember buying or planting them...also it's only 22cm long - so surely it's a different species. My other tulips are much bigger and have a sterile seedhead
Looked on RHS for 'small tulip' but no joy.
Thanks again one and all....

looks very similar my snakes head fritillary, which has the pods just bursting open now

it will be a species tulip of which there are many. I hadn't noticed the leaf in the top of the picture - oops!
snakes head pods are more rectangular and the seeds are flattish discs.

I agree with SBG. A specie tulip, definitely not a fritillary

How do I say thanks?
