I was recently given a Christmas Rose that someone was digging up but I'm not sure if to cut the stems off. New leaves are appearing and the stems are separate from these but the flowers are all dead. Should I cut the stems off or just leave them. Having googled this plant they mainly show white flowers, but mine are all a very deep mauve colour, so maybe it is not the Christmas Rose type of Hellebores. Thanks.

Thanks very much for this information. It's been a big help, as various googled sites were very confusing. I will follows your advice!

Deep mauve flowers would steer me towards one of the helleborus x hybridus cultivars - they used to be called "Lenten Roses", and flower from anytime from November tp April, although the main flowering time is Feb - March. Christmas rose is helleborus niger, which is the white, winter-flowering one. I'd cut off the old flower stem, unless you want to save any seed, but I expect that's been shed already. They're woodlanders, so a well-drained site, not too dry, under dappled shade is ideal. In late winter, before the new flower stems come up, remove all the old leaves. That will ensure no spots and disease or virus will spread from them onto emerging new leaf and flower.
