We have dry patches appearing on the lawn around about some conifers. \somebody has suggested that is due to the trees taking all the moisture. Could this be true or what else could be the cause.

The combination of the surface rooting tendency of the conifers and the dry weather will stress any lawn. I don't water my grass, I let it recover when it will, but water is the answer.
