Please, can anyone identify this alpine for me?
I nipped a small piece from a garden centre (yes, I know it's wrong, but I bet I'm not alone!) and rooted it. I forgot to note the name on the label.
The leaves are small, greenish grey and needlelike resembling those of succulents. The flowers are pink, about 4 -5 mms. across.
It has a prostrate, spreading habit.
Any info. gratefully accepted.

Must be why plants can seem so expensive for those of us who pay.

It appears that I'm the very first person to nip a cutting, then! Surely not - confession is good for the soul, so they say.

Good luck to you...it's a lovely plant. Looks like rock rose flowers with Crassula leaves !!!!

Cistus, but not one that I have seen before?
I will add my voice to those condeming the stealing of plant material from a GC or a garden, Ly! On the positive side you did at least raise a plant from it. So many stolen cuttings either die or don't even get planted.

I wouldn't dream of stealing a cutting from a plant, GC or someones garden...

It's not a Cistus...maybe a XHalimiocistus but not a Cistus

Possibly a dwarf silene, or a phlox, but it is a neat little plant. Suggest a well drained spot in sun

Thanks to those who have attempted to answer my question. Further research is pointing towards Petrocallis pyrenaica.
I am somewhat taken aback by the attitude of some of my critics as I did admit that I was wrong in taking the cutting. I can't believe that nobody out there has done a similar thing. Nobody died you know!

Lutley what do you think would happen if half the GC customers stole cuttings rather than buying the plants? I know of one garden owner who stopped opening their garden for that exact reason - people stealing cuttings... It is the same as going into a local wood and digging up the primroses or bluebells.

I'm with you Lutleyyeltz - I'm no great gardener but was brought up (by an otherwise extremely honest mother) to the notion that the odd cutting here or there was a something of a gardener's prerogative (and you don't complain when someone does it back to you). I'll bet you spent a few quid in the GC!
I can see I'll have to be careful as to where I say my plants come from! Everything's above board at the moment!

Thank you Urbanite - I was beginning to think that I was becoming the "black sheep" of GOY!
I'm sure there are plenty of gardeners who collect a few seeds, or the odd cutting from stately home gardens etc.
My late mother grew a long finger nail just for; "taking the odd cutting as a souvenir!"
You're quite right, I did spend a decent amount - I also didn't go adorned in a mask and a stripey pullover intent on crime!
I certainly didn't anticipate the furore that I appear to have generated.
PS I still haven't properly identified the plant in question - maybe I don't deserve to!

Lut I have grown something similar to this called frankenia thymifolia. Very dainty but I lost it last winter.

Annella, you're a star! That's it - thank you so much.
I have planted various cuttings (legal) and hope they survive the winter - although I'll take a few more and keep in my cold greenhouse/shed during the winter months.
Thank you, once again.

Don't take it too hard. I'm always happy to let cuttings, or seed go from plants in the garden centre, and I often give away plants, or add to a good purchase with a freebie. It's just that I like to be asked! So many of my customers are rolling rich, but ask 'What's your best price?' and 'Is it buy two, get one free?' that I've got quite defensive! It's natural, and I didn't mean to start a rolling discussion on it. It's been a real fight these last two years to make a living, so I get the 'ump!

Point taken. I spent £80 on two Taxus fastigiata and if I had asked for a discount it would have been worth far more than a 2" cutting!
Matter now closed for me!
