yes it is technically a sedge belonging to the Cyperacea family. Eriophorum anguistifolium is its botanical name. problem with common names :o)

Seem to remember being told they did actually try to spin it during the war but the staple was too short for it to be successful. Theres loads of this on the moors around Sheffield where I grew up. Didn't know it is a sedge - thanks Snoop.

This is Eriophorum or Cotton Grass and we have just been to the North York Moors for a week and there is a lot there this year.
