Thyme was my thought, and yes a gorgeous smell when crushed.

In view of the description of the smell as 'gorgeous' I would come down on the side of oregano as well. Thyme is pleasant enough but oregano is, well, 'gorgeous'.

Possibly some variety of thyme or maybe oregano. Do the leaves have a distinctive flavour and, when crushed, a strong, pungent, but pleasant smell?
