Hi everybody, I have just brought a Metrosideros Robstus, and the information I am getting tells me it should be kept in a conservatory, the chap I brought it off told me it will be fine outside in the garden all year round. Is this correct, bearing in mind we do live in Helston, Cornwall.
Thanks Ian

Hi Ian,
Although Metrosideros Robsta is probably one of the hardiest plants of the Metrosideros family, it is still classed as a tender plant and I think any frost would kill it. It's difficult to see how this can be kept inside because as far as I'm aware it grows into a very large tree.
Unless the person you bought it from sold you a new hardier species that I don't know about then I'm afraid that he may have given you the wrong information.

OK thanks for that, has it is now planted in my garden, in quiet a sheltered spot, I will have to take my chances and hope for a very mild winter. Thanks again to you both.
Ian.

Doubt it, although you've got the best chance where you are. Really needs winter protection from anything below -1 or so, perhaps a little colder if established. I used to climb one in our back garden in New Zealand when I was about 6 or 7.
