I am growing Scarlet Runners. There are plenty of bright red flowers and lots of healthy leaf growth, but when the flowers drop very few of the beans are set. There have been the odd patches of blackfly which have gone since spraying with diluted soapy water. There have also been several black ants up and down the sticks. It would seem that the flowers are constantly visited by plenty of bumble bees. The growing site is partially shaded by a large tree. I have been watering religiously every evening.

I think you may of misunderstood my question. Where the beans should be forming are empty shoots,no beans appear. If i knew how to attach a picture on here i would. Thanks for your reply.

Mine were the same until about a week ago. I now have some beans forming - hope the same thing will happen for you. Nothing I did before that made any difference.

spray with a fine water mist in the evening this will help the flowers set.
