Dizygotheca elegantissima (pruning of ...)

It must be nearly 20 years old and consists of a single stem (well trunk now). It stands about 8 feet tall with the foliage in the top 2 feet. One gardening book says the stem can be cut off- and new growth will sprout. Dare I risk it? Has anyone got experience with one of these or a similar mature plant?
Thanks ...
