I would like to purchase some ferns for a south coast garden, to plant under a very tall privet hedge. I would like them to be evergreen, not too big and definitely NON INVASIVE. Any suggestions most welcome.

Great plants, so useful and varied. I particularly like dryopteris erythrosora which is evergreen, the new fronds bronze, and polystichum polyblepharum, also evergreen, the leaves of which are glossy.

Not all the varieties of those are evergreen though Spritz, my polysticum setiferum and dryopteris felis mas both disappear in winter.

Thanks everyone. I've chosen a nice mix of dryopteris and polystichum and am looking out for a d. erythrosora. I think they'll all look lovely. Thanks again.

Look at Dryopteris and Asplenium, both of which don't object to dry shade. I also like Polystichum and Polypodium.
