A couple of years ago I bought two Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum' from The Eden Project. They have struggled to grow until this year, where they both now have sizeable rosettes at the top. However the rosettes are now two heavy for the stem to support which is much smaller at the base than at the top of the plant. The whole thing is now very top heavy. any suggestions as to how I can encourage more growth down the stem to make it sturdier?

What you can do is cut the top off with at least an inch of stem, leave it to dry for two or three days for the cut to callous over, then plant it in gritty compost, keeping it on the dry side at first, then watering like you would the main plant. The bare stem will then sprout and you'll end up with a multi headed standard which should be more manageable. Good luck!
