have put in some cabbage plants in taken ok ,but they are been eaten to bitts .who or what is doing it and how can I stop it

Or pigeons or slugs or snails. Netting them keeps off pigeons and butterflies, pellets deal with the other two.

Slug pellets are pesticides. I wouldn't spray the cabbages though - agree with MG! A lot of people pick off the caterpillars by hand and squish them, and also watch out for the eggs which are laid on the leaves - moving these before they hatch is the best way if you don't use a net.
