I don't think its Camellia, even though the leaves are remarkably similar, because of the two small seedcases (not buds) on pedicels. If those turn black as they ripen, its Prunus laurocerasus of some variety, not sure which cultivar, because it's not the basic one. If they turn red, its Prunus lusitanica, but it's less likely to be that because the seedpods on that are more eggshaped. Seedcases on Camellia don't look at all like this.

It hasn't flowered and maybe this will help... it started growing back and getting more leaves in July/August....

It must have flowered - its got immature seed pods. If its a Prunus, it would have been around May time, with short, white candle style flowers held erect which you might not have noticed.

Oh I see them now Bamboo.....

Lol, Pam - those definitely aren't Camellia seedpods, are they... but the leaves are uncannily like Camellia. I'd love to know what variety of Prunus this is, it's got much nicer leaves than the standard cherry laurel.

Hi, I think they look like Holly leaves, if you enlarge the photo and look at the bunch of leaves top right , you can see the points on either side, a lot of the leaves on my holly start out like this, and get the points on as they get older, {I may be wrong, see what you think}, Derek.

Possible Derek

Hmm, not too sure about that Derek - the leaves in the foreground already look to be 3/4 inches long, isn't that a bit big for any holly (I imagine you're thinking of the Highclere variety)? Plus the seed cases are on distinct pedicels, which you don't get on holly. I'll be interested in what colour those berries/seeds end up once they're mature ...

Wow... I think Bamboo was spot on... Buds are turning a bit redish. Will take a photo this evening.

Wait and see how they end up Detta - red or black is the question;-) having looked again at Derek's suggestion, he might be right - I can now see the two little slightly spikey bits on the leaves top right. If those berries end up bright red, then it may well be Ilex altaclerensis 'camellifolia', although the berries are described as 'large' and I'm not sure I'd call those large.

Hello garden lovers
They ended up turning red - just berries no flowers

Detta there has to have been flowers to get berries!

Ilex altoclerensis camellifolia it is then - flowers in spring, but they'll be fairly insignificant and probably white.
