Cotoneaster procumbens 'Queen of Carpets' is a good one, spreads and spreads, but all Cotoneasters prefer full sun. If the area's north facing, unless its open and exposed, it may not get any sun at all during winter.

Will look at these suggestions. I have just stripped the bank of some things that had seeded there and treated with root killer so have 6 weeks to plan what to do with the area. many Thanks

Are you thinking of a formal scheme or something natural?
Buddleias seem to grow almost anywhere. If soil is lime/chalky then hebes, potentillas and berberis should do well.
What did you clear away? That will tell you what species will do well.

Cotoneaster of the creeping kind, say C. dammeri, for a start.
Various flat growing Salix might survive.
Mossy Saxifrages if it is not too dry.
