Foxes???? I live on a busy open corner and have a Maple tree planted in the lawn with bulbs around the base. For awhile now I have been waking up to find my bulbs lying on the grass with a large hole round the base of the tree,I replant and it happens again. Anyone know how I can stop it? I have just put some strong smelling mixed spice on the soil....may put them off (:0)

Chilli flakes are supposed to deter mammals, I wonder do you see squirrels?

I have seen one recently yes Pam,but a neighbour this morning has said she has seen, a fox walking down the middle of the road at half past 8,but why would they dig a hole? I cant see or smell anything in it.I remember seeing 2 sets of dog like footprints going across my lawn when we had all that snow earlier in the year thought it was strange because you don't see loose dogs now days.

They eat worms.......amongst other things

Foxes...particularly cubs, will dig out small holes in order to get to the leather jackets and chaffer grubs under the grass.

chances are though, it could be squirrels digging your bulbs up

Squirrels get my vote - the best deterrent is to find a method of fixing wire netting to the ground, although a determined squirrel will bite its way through it. It's either hoping you've got crocus there (which they eat), or burying things of its own, like acorns, nuts, etc.

I think foxes do dig bulbs up. I saw one lying on the lawn one night next to an urn that had had tulip bulbs dug up. I'd thought it was badgers until I saw the fox. I used chilli powder, though flakes would probably withstand rain better.

I unfortunatly have some experience of pesky rabbits..... and foxes ....although thanks to mother nature and a little help from a local stoat the problem is easing.
Troughs filled with pretty heuchera and tubs with colourful bedding plants turned night after night into war zones as they practice digging. :0((
copious amounts of chilli too but I swear they got a taste for it!
