Hi, I was hoping that someone may be able to help me identify what kind of grapes I have growing in my garden - they were planted before I moved in. Without fail they grow some pretty decent bunches, this years don't seem quite as big. They start green then around the beginning of September start to turn Purple.

I've attached a few photos, including one of a typical leaf from the vine. Also one of a grape opened, showing it has a seed - which from a quick search could mean it's a wine grape rather than a table grape?

I appreciate any help, I'm very much a garden novice. Thankfully these things don't seem to need much help, though I do spot the odd spider plus web.

Thanks

Andrew

It's difficult to tell what variety a grape is just by looking at them as there is a lot of varieties and hybrids. A seeded grape doesn't necessarily mean it's a wine grape, grapes grown for wine production usually have a higher sugar content.

If I had to guess at what type you have I would guess at either Boskoop Glory or Black Hamburger purely because these tend to be the most common black grape grown outside (not in a greenhouse) domestically in the UK. You must bear in mind though that there are hundreds of crosses and hybridized grape varieties, so it could be any.

Agree with Myron that just because it has seeds does not mean it is a wine grape. Much more likely to be a table grape and, if I had to make a guess I'd go for Black Hamburg but there are, as Myron says, a huge number of crosses.

hi andyuk i have one these grape vines,( google marechal foch) as you thought it is a wine grape which does make a good tasting wine, also a very prolific grower, morrisons supermarket were selling them a few years ago, mine has produced loads of fruit for a couple of years having leaving it to its own devices it is now growing along my side fence & back fence creating a lot of greenery to around 30ft each side with masses of grapes.

Thanks for the replies, I forgot to say in my post that I understand there's hundreds of varieties, I was just hoping I could narrow it down.

Gaz, from what you say and from a quick read up on it. It does sound like it could be Marechal Foch - there's even a Morrisons not far from here ;) And you're not wrong about prolific grower, I have to trim the vine weekly to stop it getting out of control!

Thanks again for you help!
