my plants have produced lots of clusters of black seeds, how do you grow a plant from the seeds of the actual plant? are these black clusters the actual seed?

Try sowing some. If the seeds are very small just cover them with vermiculite, keep them in a warm place and see what happens. Keep some in reserve for when you find out what the plant was. But remember that not all plants produce viable seed even if the stuff looks like seed. Especially if it's from an exotic place and didn't have a pollinater.
