Shredded paper uses in the garden

Do any of you use the above in or around the garden for anything?

I have access to a couple of large bags a week and I've started saving it up for something useful, maybe as a mulch or an addition to the compost bin?

It can be used to mix with compost. As it is shredded it will rot down quicker, but don't over do it and add too much. You could also burn the rest and add the ash to your garden.

I shred all my personal papers and add them to my compost bin..a layer at a time is plenty..and I turn the compost over now and then..it soon rots down,I think I have heard of putting paper,or newspaper in the bottom of trenches ,and then adding the compost, before planting? Not tried it,so I don't know if it's a good idea..

Some gardeners on allotments used to put newspaper in the bottom of their bean trenches to help hold the moisture. Don't know whether they tore it up first (no shredders in those days) Maybe some still do.

My only word of caution is be careful it if is full colour glossy magazine type shredded paper which will take longer to rot down and could, I think, pollute the soil.
