What shrubs would be best in a partially sunny area planted up against a wall

I'm not clear whether you want something that will grow up the wall, or whether you want something freestanding near, but away from the wall. Bear in mind that nothing should be planted closer than 12 inches to a wall, even climbers - you just need to persuade them back to grow up the wall if that's what you want. You haven't said the height you want either so I'll pluck a shrub out of the air - Chaenomeles japonica, which likes to grow in the lee of a wall, can be pruned, produces quinces, has flowers early in the year before the leaves appear. Prune after flowering. More info from you would get you more answers in terms of choices!
