I have access to split/spoiled silage bales in black plastic. At least 2 years old. Can it be added to my allotment compost bin, or better, spread on the soil as a winter mulch Cheers

No, just thay 'thank you very much, BUT NO THANK YOU'.
Silage is highly acidic and rich in sugars. It will be of no benefit to the soil and should be kept well away from any drains as rain run-off from silage is highly polluting to watercourses.

Yep I will go along with the above amswer just look at the sepa.org.uk site
It will do the land NO good at all - Please dispose of it safely -- and tell the person who was intending to give it to you - He is a first class idiot - Ken

Thanks for your support, Ken. For the last 25 years of my working life I was an environment protection officer for SEPA (formerly NERPB) and silage incidents on farms were significant part of the job.

Too right, terrible stuff!

Bet it smells lovely though! Rich and organic. Bulba, even after two years? I do understand the sugars element, but if it's full of worms an' stuff, it would be okay wouldn't it? I've never tried it other than fresh and feeding to the cows. How long do you think it would take to break down then?

Snoopdog - Sorry but anyone who is willing to give people silage bales without knowing the dangers is an idiot - and should not be allowed to use the stuff in the 1st place or allowed to give it away willy nilly - Ken

"How long would it take to break down....."? Honestly, Hc, I just don't know. I suppose that it must, eventually, but I have never given that any great thought. Certainly it is still 'strong' for more than a couple of years. In the farm arena spoilt bales will sit in a corner of the field for many years in the centre of a patch of black, slimy ground with nothing growing nothing, not even weeds, growing in it.

How do I say thanks?
