Our summer flowering jasmine gets pretty bare in the winter, but is as tough as old boots & is always a pain to keep under control during the summer.

Not really, Sam. It is a woody shrub that is largely evergreen. It will drop a few leaves but keep most. Winter Jasmine will have yellow buds and flowers throughout winter. There is a white flowedred Summer Jasmine that flowers later in the year.
