While digging up my inherited very overgrown garden i found what i presume are bulbs they are a sort of reddish brown and they kind of look like bulbs stuck on top of each other any idea what they are where they should be positioned and as the roots are sprouting all over the place which way up should they go

yes they do sound like crocosmia bt they could be dierrema [spelling] angels fishing rods, as they behave like this too.

I would tend to agree they are crocosmia. Separate the top bulb of each chain and replant these, discarding the others. The top ones are the newest while the rest are older and less productive

had to look that plant up.
ya, it could be either.still think in apot would be best, crocosmia grows to 3ft and dierama 5ft.but dierama dosent like being moved it take ayear or two to then settle again it says.both beautiful plants though.

I agree with Plantmaiden. For me, this is a weed of the worst kind. Today, I mowed the grass and the crocosmia. It is impossible to get rid of (like Muscari). They will grow in filtered sun, and the color is softer. Dig them out and be assured there are plenty that you missed.

« what is the planting distance between plants, and is it to late to plant them now...

they sound abit like crocosmia(montbretia) which are little corms ,between 1/2 inch to 1 inch across and 1/2 inch in height they like a sunny position and in any good draining soil.
i would put them in a pot just incase they arent, that way if they are of a spreading nature you have contained it.
