Answers
Poisettias need 14-16 hours of complete darkness each day, for 6-10 weeks, to produce flower buds, but total darkness for a long period will kill it, just like most other plants. Mums and Holiday Cactus work the same way.

my daughter has had a red poinsettia for 3 years, she covers hers from september for about 8weeks.from morning till lunch time.other than that you just keep it warm not in a draught, good light and moist air so mist it every now and then.hopefully it will live on for a few years.
