I have 2 standard privets at my front door and the leaves have fallen because of the hard frosts we had. They did have buds forming but these looked frosted as well!? Will they produce new buds, are they dead? Should I prune them and hope that it will produce more buds/growth sometime soon.

I would not prune until all danger of frost has passed. The twigs you may eventually need to prune away will serve to create a microclimate for those below. Privet is very resilient and everything is slow this year so I would wait. If they are in the earth I would think close to the house they will survive. Privet is only semi evergreen so you have been fortunate in the past not to have them denuded.
