Evergreen polystichum: Should I trim it down to close to the base, or just leave it as it is? The foliage has survived the winter without the slightest detriment. The leaves look perfect still. If I trim it down, will it soon grow fresh leaves to replace them? There seems nothing wrong with the ones it has at present. Would a trim be to its advantage? Such a lovely and rewarding plant. (I much prefer the evergreen ones to the deciduous ones).

OK. Will follow your advice. Is it the same with all evergreen ferns?

Yes, more or less - you can cut out any diseased, dead or badly damaged leaves though.
