My gooseberries aren't fruiting and I don't remember seeing any flowers. An earlier post indicated that Melbourne winters may not be cold enough. Is there anything I can do to induce flowering or should I pull out the gooseberry bushes? Thanks for your advice.

I saw them in Germany grown on a single stem. Kept mine like that for about 10 years. Had plenty of fruit,
then they died off. Worth trying. Less space used.

Diane did you notice that Jennifer is in Australia? My understanding is that your winters are not cold enough Jennifer.

the flowers are small and green so it may be that you havent noticed them. As for you being in Oz i'm not sure how that will affect you. there are several members on here that come from Australia so perhaps they can help better.

Hi, welcome to GoY, gooseberries, Ribes uvacrispum, are grown in cool parts of Europe, and Great Britain, and do best in cool, damp summers, so as has been said, it may be just too warm or them, although there are later fruiting varieties, in which case there may still be a chance of some fruit, but don't hold your breath, Derek.

Perhaps better to think about other kinds of fruit and
buy imported Gooseberries for cooking ? They should
grow in Tasmania where the weather is more European.

Some people here in the low desert of Arizona grow plants that need cold winters by applying kilos of ice every other night through January. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that is practical for your garden! :)
