I have a south facing garden and would like to grow some laurel in garden banks and or pots is this possible? If I can grow the laurel in a pot, could I surround it with dwarf escallonia or azellia. My pots are only 9" deep by approx 24" in diameter ?

No - Laurel wants to get 8 feet by 8 feet (assuming you mean the common spotted laurel, Aucuba japonica) and will require a much, much larger pot (preferably 2/3 feet deep) in order to thrive - and even then, it'll not be happy after about 3 years or so.
