That should be fine as it is in the Betulaceae family what you don't want is to plant anything from the Rosaceae family in that spot in case there is a blight problem take a look at http://www.botanical-online.com/familiarosaceasangles.htm for info.

And if you do need to plant something from the Rose family in the same soil then all you need to do is to buy the soil conditioner, sold for that purpose.

Owdboggy your comment assumes the rose died of natural causes, if it didn't then it is not wise to plant anything fro the Roseaceae family for several years.

Since the only way Roses have died in this garden is through the deliberate application of weedkiller it is not really a problem for us. However, we have had other mmebers of that family succumb to various illnesses and replanted in the same soil after treatment without further loss.
