Have just purchased two citrus trees which should be hardy to minus 5C. Iam dubious about planting them in open ground, has anyone tried keeping a citrus outside through the winter?

I tried 3 winters ago, on a Lemon called 'Eureka' which claimed to be hardy down to -10C, despite it being a mild (and quite dry) winter and not actually getting below -5C it died. Don't believe the hype is my advice!
