I appreciate your replies but feel really silly - yes all the roots detached (and removed) this is just the old climbers that have been left at the upper part of the house and my husband seems to think they are now beginning to see signs of growing. Should I just get him to get new specs :-)

Hi - thanks for the reply. I think that may be the next job for us. It's an old cotswold stone house and the ivy had been allowed free reign and, consequently, damage has been done that needs to be attended to.

It would be wise to remove the remains of the ivy from your wall. If you only removed late last year there may be signs of growth but this will die off.
