I have a salix flamingo and a lilac bush just breaking bud but the weather is due to turn cold again this week, will they be ok or should i somehow cover them please.

I'd agree, only worry about the Salix - it won't kill it, but the new growth may get nipped by the frost, so cover it if you're worried.
