Please help,I have a very shady patch of lawn that gets quite damp in winter and when it rains for long periods so have decided to strip the lawn there (which was patchy anyhow) and turn it into a bed (i don't have the time or ability to dig a trench and lay a drain system) Are there any plants i could plant there that would thrive? Given that at best in the height of summer it would only get half an hour of late afternoon sunlight. It is a small bed so no huge plant suggestions thanks!

ferns and hostas would like this area, but be alert for slugs.

Yup, ferns and Hostas would be my suggestion too. There are loads of varieties of both these plants, so you should be able to get a really interesting bed just using these two.
