We had a ceanothus which we unfortunately died over the winter, we would like to replace it but do not know which variety it was.
It was approximately 6-7 feet tall with dark blue flowers in may and sometimes a second flowering later in the year. It also grew more like a tree thatn a shrub with quite a thick trunk. Can anyone advise me on the likely variety?

i have also lost mine this winter. It was a variety called Edinburgh, a nice deep blue and tree like rather than shrub.

Probably Ceanothus thyrsiflorus, if it was evergreen. Otherwise look at C. 'concha'. Don't, though, buy C. thyrsiflorus 'repens' this is a mound forming one.
