I have some ornamental grasses growing near my pond which look absolutely lifeless (or even dead!) If I give them a good haircut do you think they will revive or shall I just dig them up and plant something else in their wake?

It depends if they're herbaceous or evergreen ones - Do you know their name? Herbaceous grasses should be showing new growth at the base - mine are. They should have been cut back earlier in the year, but it's not too late to cut out the old stems with scissors.

If they're evergreen ones, then they might be dead - try combing them out with your gloved hands, or a small rake.

I'd like to know what they are, though!
