Arbutus are one of the very few ericaceous plants that can actually grow on alkaline (including chalk) soils. I presume you are talking specifically about Arbutus unedo? It is quite slow growing too, no more than about 8 inches a year extension growth.

Just add plenty of organic material when planting and mulch regularly there after.
