I have a small garden with a conifer hedge to hide the view of the house opposite. I have trimmed the trees underneath to a height of 4 feet as they looked straggly. Photos attached. I want to grow plants under the conifers to tidy he gardewn up. Now, a) the soil is poor. b) there is not much sun as the area faces east. c) Very little rain penetrates the conifer foliage. before I install a watering system and improve the soil. I would like to know if I would be wasting my time as the dropping dead conifer foliage + little will see off anything I plant ? If so , can you suggest another improvment please.?

Previous question
i think i would be tempted to put bark down and lots of pretty pots dotted about, that way you can change the plants and colours all through the seasons.
