Can anyone suggest a good plant to grow in this trough outside the back door please? I would like something evergreen and tall enough to hide the horizontal black pipe. I tried pieris in there but it died. The area is in the shade during the morning but gets sun in the afternoon and evening. Any ideas?
Thanks.

any shrub that gets more than 10inches or so and more high will die in that trough - there's not enough depth for anything to grow successfully, other than annuals, perhaps. If the area gets some sun, you could grow marguerite daisies, probably 2 bushes in it, for the summer, if not sunny, then upright fuchsias, but if you want something like a shrub, you need to replace the trough with something that's at least a foot deep and 12 inches wide.
