any idea`s what is causing the leaves of my escollonia to turn yellow and fall off, some have black spots is on clay soil but been growing well previously

I'd spray with a fungicide just in case its fungal leaf spot, or black spot, and I'd use Roseclear 3, made up to fungicidal strength, and give a liberal sprinkling of growmore around the base, raked in.
