A few weeks ago i was given a large plastic bag full of firewood.When i got to the bottom of the bag (which was waterlogged) I found a small length of Mahonia which was sprouting new growth.I placed it in a bowl of water and it is flourishing BUT there is no sign of roots forming. What do i need to do to promote growth?

I'd certainly put it into gritty compost so that the reduced availability of water encourages it to grow roots. remove the lowest leaf so that the dormant bud in the axil may start into growth.
