I suppose it could be trained, but you'd forever be tying it in and I don't think it would do the tree much good. Plus, many are fairly slow growing, so it would take ages to get the effect you're after. Acers have such a pretty natural habit, I think it would be a shame to torture one in this way!

ive made a cherry tree into what looks like a climber bye keep retying it but its not to hard.i wouldnt do it with an acer though as they are so delicate and you would loose what makes an acer stunning .my cherry looks so good that people dont believe it is one.i grew it round an old swing frame to cover it.that in turn frames a 5` head i built under it.when the tree gets more established and the other plants im growing up each leg im going to drill a hole in the top and poar salty water down the inside to rot it out.tou can see this on one of my earlier blogs .the down side is i dont get much blossem but im not botherd . just wonderd why dont you use a conventional climber ?
