Laurel Hedging

We have planted two laurel hedges. On one side there is a lush green hedge but on the other although there is new growth, it is rather threadbare with loys of yellow leaves.
Any ideas......could it be a soil/drainage problem?

It raises the question - what was under the poorly Laurels before you planted them. Was the soil poorer there? What was there before? Another thought - has there been any weedkiller spray at the other side that might affect the hedge?
