can i put bulbs in pots to grow then when big enough transplant to garden

yes you can. I have some bulbs where I 'sink' the pot into the ground and then when they ahve finished flowering I lift the pot and put it around the back of the greenhouse to die down.

If you can get them out of the pot in a solid block then you can pop this into a hole in the garden. If you mean that you want to divide the pot upn into individual bulbs then I would advise against it as the roots will not 'take'.
The simplest way is to take Seaburngirl's idea and just plant the whole pot and let them flower; remember to mark the position of the pot!
