I've never done so, just leave them to drop naturally - they don't stay long after they have died back. Mind you we don't deadhead our rhododendrons either!

If you don't like dead flowers you can pick them away, there may be buds behind them. There is no hard rule really. Just that they can look a bit messy for a while until the dead flowers go away.
