Eveyrthing's later than usual this year too, but Scotsgran is right, you usually get the blossom, then the leaves open.

I have a damson and it flowers then leaves appear as the flowers go. I take it that is natures way of letting the bees and wasps see the flowers in order for them to pollinate the tree and produce fruit.
