Salix like a big hole to plant them in as the roots will need to spread
good free draining soil,they dont like clay soils so if you have this soil type add plenty of organic matter to enrich. In the first year water well and after the first year in spring trim back and you should have a healthy seasons growth.
I had one they grew huge after i had kept in a' bob' shape for about 3 years.
