Can I ask a silly question, well 2 actually ?
I believe the shrub next to the Pieris is a Choisya. Is it dead? When I cut into a small branch it looks "green" inside. Should I give it a chance or dig it out, doesn't look very nice. 2nd q. what on earth is the shrub on the next tier down between the choisya and Pieris? It looks untidy, but perhaps it's a bit late to give it a haircut, well only a trim I had in mind

Choisya looks like its suffered, possibly during the winter. Depends how long you want to wait for it to grow back, if it does so you can either hack it back and wait, or dig it out and replace.
Can't really tell what the shrub next tier down is, not close enough, but I suspect it may well be some kind of Mahonia - need a pic a bit nearer to be sure.

What an interesting looking garden, Titchy. Are these a series of raised beds?
I fear that the Choisya might be dead but if you can bear to leave it for another month or two, you never know.
It is difficult to see the other shrub clearly enough to give an id. Does it have holly like leaves? in which case it could be Mahonia.

Thanks to both of you, I think you are correct, the minute I read Mahonia, I remembered someone told me that before it was moved, so I'll be able to read up on it. Bulbaholic you have not read my blog, not very good but it's about "From the North Face of the Eiger to a terraced garden" I think you can find it under the sloping garden ideas. Anyway thank you both

You'r telling me NP, just came in from digging right at the top of the terraces, and I am litteraly knackered. It's going to take me ages to complete this back garden,(as you so rightly say it will never be finished. The landscapers were good but there is so much more that needs doing, All the little corners that have been overlooked. Well let's be honest it needs a woman's touch.
