Answers
I use a hose pipe as it is quite stiff and doesnt 'kink' giving a smooth line. It also allows you to see the effect before cutting it.

I would mark out the line of the curve with a piece of rope or hosepipe and then use a half-moon turf cutter (a spade is almost as good) to cut along the line.
