It is generally better, and easier, to propagate rhododendrons by layering rather than taking cuttings. In essence find a young(ish) shoot that can be buried under the soil (leaving the growing tip above ground) and by next year the shoot should have produced new roots on the section buried below the soil. For more detail I suggest you either find a book about propagation or use a web browser to search for layering.
