The velvety husks will open up and let the nuts out naturally, when they are ready. Commercially, they just let them fall onto a tarp, maybe giving the tree a shake to encourage them. If it's still a small tree, Afarrell, it may be practical to pick the stubborn ones, as long as the husk's been open at least a day, though those are frequently runty or bitter.
