If they are too big for pots, then you have nothing to lose. Or try them in a trough?

You can. I used to have one I called "Big Daddy". I cut him in half when he got too big but his flowers were never as good again. :-(
The advice I was given was to dust the tubers with green sulphur powder to protect them from rotting.
